Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the media
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are probably the biggest sales of the year, so analyzing the media coverage is twice as interesting.
For this research we analyzed every article published from November 1st to December 4th mentioning the sales, this is more than 25 000 stories. We calculated the most mentioned brands, products and retailers and, of course, the media: top shared on Facebook and Twitter.
Having collected all this data we saw some unexpected results. For instance, can you guess the most mentioned product?
It is Microsoft’s Xbox One, but here is something worth mentioning: while everyone talked and wrote about the console from Redmond, Microsoft itself was mentioned a lot less. LG, on the other hand, is the second most mentioned brand with only Apple ahead, but none of its products made it to the top.
Another interesting detail is Walmart being the top mentioned retailer. The chain is first, but it is hardly a winner: many of the stories cover not the deals, but the strike of its workers.
