Each year the biggest stars in music walk down the red carpet to the Grammy Awards ceremony.  Today, it’s one of the most prestigious music awards in the world, but let’s look back in time to see how it all started.  The first ceremony took place in 1959 to honour musicians for their accomplishments and now it shares recognition of the music industry as that of the other performance awards such as the Emmy Awards, Tony Awards or the Academy Awards. But have you ever wondered why it’s called Grammy’s? Well, it appears it was named after Emily Berliner’s invention – the gramaphone! “Oh, makes sense now!”, I hear you say. So, it is only logical that the winners get awarded with a gold-plated gramphones with their name engraved on them.

During the first ceremony only 28 Grammys were awarded (compared to 84 in 2017) and many significant records have been set throughout the history of the Awards. But despite the honor the awards carry, many artists have critisised the ceremeony and  industry insiders consider the Grammys to be merely a reflection of mainstream commercial success.
